AISC
- American Institute of Steel Construction. Organization that
regulates steel construction practices and safety measures. It is
very important that your mezzanine manufacturer conforms to all AISC
regulations and specifications
Anchors Used to attach the foot plates to the floor.
Generally 4 to 4-1/2 long x 3/4 to 5/8 wide . Holes are drilled in
the flooring and the anchors are set in place.
Approval Drawings
- CAD generated blueprints showing all dimensions, systems details, and
orientation with related scope of work. Approval drawings must be
checked for accuracy and signed. This directs the manufacturer as which
way to proceed.
ASTM -
American Society for Testing and Materials. Organization
that puts forth stringent testing policy for most materials. All
steel non fabricated steel components must conform to ASTM regulations,
demand it!

Bar Joist An open web framing component
used to span large areas. Also Open
Web Bar Joist.
Bar Grating Steel or fiberglass
manufactured to produce an open grid load carrying deck. Typically used
on mezzanines to accommodate air flow and light from one level to
another. Standard type used on mezzanines is (1 x 1/8).
Base Plate Also referred to as a
foot plate. A steel plate which is welded to
the bottom of a column to help support the column and distribute the
Floor Load.
B-Deck Also referred to as roof deck
or corrugated steel. Corrugated steel
used as a deck substructure under plywood, floor plate and concrete.
General made of 18 or 20 gauge galvanized steel material.
Beam Wide
flange structural member identified by depth & weight, or sheet steel
bent to increase structural integrity.
BOCA-
Building Officials & Code Administrators International. The
national building code standard for public
access mezzanine systems.
Building Codes Requirements for
construction that typically only effects handrail and stair design as
related to mezzanines. Various codes are UBC,
SBCC and BOCA.
OSHA is a federal standard which many times is referred to
incorrectly as a code.

which prove the integrity of a structural design. In most cases the are
sealed by a Professional Engineer registered in the state where the
project is located. Typically required when applying for a building

Catwalk A narrow walkway, often elevated. A mezzanine catwalk
system is most often used with shelving to create an elevated walkway
between the shelving units. Also referred to as
Shelving or Rack
Supported Mezzanines
C-Channel - A beam that has a C shaped
profile. Generally used to describe
Cold Rolled Steel however, Structural
Steel is also made into C-Channels.
Clear Height The dimension from the
floor to the underside of the mezzanine framing.
Clear Span - The distance between mezzanine
columns. Generally longer on
structural steel mezzanines than on any
other type. Also referred to as Column
Spacing
Cold Rolled Steel Sheet steel that
is bent into C-Channel Beams to increase
structural integrity. Weight, Load
Capacity and Clear Spans are decreased
with this design. Cold Rolled Steel Mezzanines are generally
cheaper to produce and install and have quicker production times than
Structural Steel Mezzanines.
Column Square tube steel used to support mezzanine framing at
a desired elevation. Standard column would be 5 x 5, 6x 6, 7 x 7
ect.
Column Load - The weight applied to each
column in a floor supported mezzanine system calculated in pounds per
square foot (PSF) Column Load divided into the size of the
base plate will give the
Floor Load
Column Spacing - The distance measured
between one column and another. Also referred to as

Corral Gate- A
gate designed for the upper level of a mezzanine to handle large pallet
loads quickly and safely. The corral gate is designed to pivot and
provide an integral railing at the mezzanines edge to prevent
accidental falls.
Corrugated Steel- Sheet steel that is
bent and formed to increase strength, creating a "wave" profile.
Corrugated steel generally has a galvanized finish. Also called
b-deck or roof deck
C-Section 9, 11, or 12 gauge flat steel
which is brake formed into the shape of a letter C and is 12, 16" or
20" deep. Often produces a more cost effective beam on
small mezzanines but not practical on large systems. See also

the total square footage of the mezzanine floor. This number plus
the Live Load Capacity divided into

run parallel to the mezzanine or in tight spaces when stairs are
required to turn corners.

A gate designed to be completely removed to create access to mezzanine.
Generally made out of the same material as the mezzanine handrail.
Live Load Capacity - The weight

mezzanine to withstand movement caused by earthquakes, earth vibrations
or earth movements.
Seismic Calculations
Mathematical computations which prove the integrity of a structural
design. In most cases the are sealed by a Professional Engineer
registered in the state where the project is located. Typically required
when applying for a building permit in a mid to high seismic zone.

Supported Mezzanine - A mezzanine system that is created by
building catwalks and access pass-thrus through
shelving and pallet rack systems, allowing pedestrian access to upper
levels of storage.
Slide Gate Generally
4, 5 or 6 feet in length. The gate is designed to slide along the edge
of the mezzanine to allow access to the mezzanine. It can be opened
either manually or electrical power.
Span The
distance of a framing member between columns. Bar joist framing allows
the maximum span when designing a mezzanine.
